A new milestone: 3,191 European software companies
OurSoftware.eu has grown into a directory of 3,191 verified European software companies. That is more than a number: it is proof that for almost every layer of the digital stack there is a European alternative โ from cloud and email to payments, analytics and AI.
We only count companies that meet our criteria: based in Europe, under European ownership, and with a clear focus on software or software-driven services. No US subsidiaries, no letterbox headquarters. That is why every hundred additions is a step forward for anyone who wants to be less dependent on Big Tech.
Where do the 3,191 come from?
The growth did not happen overnight. In recent months we imported large datasets from sources such as the European Tech Map and Europees Alternatief. Every company was checked for ownership, headquarters and European character. Only those that pass our criteria make it into the directory; the rest end up on the non-EU list or are logged as โundecidedโ for manual review.
The result is an increasingly complete picture of the European tech landscape. You can explore companies by category, by country or on the interactive map.
Three newly added companies in the spotlight
From the recent import we highlight three companies that show how diverse European tech ownership is:
A Belgian consortium of 18 European banks building Wero: a pan-European digital wallet for peer-to-peer, e-commerce and point-of-sale payments. A direct European answer to US payment platforms.
The Swiss mobile payment solution for shops, online stores, parking and public transport. Fully Swiss, from ownership to infrastructure.
A German price comparison site from Berlin, majority-owned by Axel Springer SE. An example of a European platform that helps consumers without making their data the product.
What does this mean for European tech?
3,191 companies means procurement teams, IT departments and entrepreneurs no longer have to say โthere is no European alternativeโ. There almost always is โ sometimes in a neighbouring country, sometimes in your own city. The remaining work is to make those alternatives visible and comparable.
Our mission remains: every time someone makes a software choice, a clear European alternative should be on the table. With 3,191 companies, we are getting closer to that goal.
